This was adorable. The art is amazing and fantastically stylized. I really think that this graphic novel could make a difference on children’s lives. It’s also extremely easy to read. I practically read it in one sitting. The emotions hit hard, too. Marlene goes through many hardships on her way to her hair-acceptance, but she shows that kids can make it out on the other side, thriving. The characters were also interesting and the message was simple enough for most children to understand. I loved the little animals that popped up in the background— very good. I loved the way that the illustrations showed Marlene’s imagination like flowing water. The story had strong themes of self acceptance and familial love. I also think that it dealt with difficult to understand concepts like generational trauma and broke them down for easy brain absorbing :).
