In this middle grade graphic novel, readers follow Marlene as she deals with growing up. Part of her growth causes her to tackle how the thoughts of others have been affecting her, as well as learning to speak her mind in an effective and non hurtful manner.

First off, the artwork in this is absolutely stunning! The visuals reflect real life so well that I was instantly drawn (pun intended) into this world.

Second, the story is heart-wrenching, if though I myself have not dealt with the same instances as Marlene. Marlene deals with the words of family and other school children as they constantly belittle her hair and how they don't see it as "good". This, understandably, colors how she views herself.

With the help of her Tía Ruby and her best friend Camilla, Marlene learns more about taking care of her hair than she ever had before. She was able to voice her thoughts to her mother, who in turn listened and helped Marlene achieve her goal.

Ultimately, this is a beautiful story of self acceptance and unlearning ingrained opionions that have been passed down for generations. I think this should be a staple novel for all, young and old.
