This has been one of my favorite recent YA reads, and I read a lot of the genre. Frank Li (or just Frank, but making way for lots of “frankly” puns) is a first generation Korean American boy navigating first loves and family obligations.
Unlike in some YA books, his parents are fully developed characters, which adds depth to the story. The culture and traditions of his family play a large role in the story, as Frank must determine which edicts from his parents to follow.
Additionally, Frank’s relationship with his best friend is a delight. Seeing male friendship depicted in a way that is not based in hyper masculinity was a real treat.
David Yoon is married to YA author Nicola Yoon. I cannot wait to see what comes next from this dynamic duo.
