Frankly In Love is a book that is heartfelt, humorous and just what I needed.

Frank Li is a High School Senior and trying to figure out who he is. He feels pressure from his traditional parents to date a Korean girl. But when he starts dating Brit Means who is white he knows his parents won’t approve. His childhood friend Joy Song is in a similar situation so they decide to pretend to date one another to please their parents while they secretly date their significant others. As their relationships become more serious complications arise taking Frank on journey of analysis and self-discovery.

I connected with Frank immediately. His humor and observations about the world around him was refreshing to read. He’s often blunt and I liked his honesty. I particularly connected with the storyline about interracial dating. My husband and I are from different ethnicities and I have come across people who don’t approve. While my experiences haven’t been as blatant as Frank’s I appreciate having a book that I felt tells my story in an authentic way.

The plot had twists and turns forcing Frank to take a closer look at who he is and who he wants to be. He struggles between the expectations of his parents to stay true to their Korean traditions and the American culture he grew up in and knows. This story took on some difficult topics and handled them in a way that was honest and respectful. I laughed, cried and cringed but in the end this was a beautiful story about someone evolving into the person they want to be.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher for review. All opinions are my own.
