I really, really want to like this book, but I can tell by the excerpt it’s not for me. I’m not really interested in modern young adult novels, and while I’m open to learning about these characters’ struggles, I just can’t relate to any of it.

There also seems to be a lot of generalizing and stereotyping.
For example, the character wonders how many immigrants like his father work a blue-collar job (owning a grocery store) while secretly holding a white-collar degree. Sorry to break it to the author, but there are plenty of white-collar degree holding folks (who aren’t recent immigrants like the character’s father) who also work blue-collar jobs or own grocery stores, laundromats, and other businesses. It’s called changing careers or entrepreneurship.
