Quadara, a divided kingdom, works like an ecosystem governed by Queenly Law and its four rulers Queens Iris of Archia, Queen Corra of Eonia, Queen Stessa of Ludia, and Queen Marguerite of Toria.
Each of the quadrants provides a valuable service: Archia provides crops and natural resources, Eonia develops medicine and technology, Ludia provides art, fashion and entertainment, and Toria arranges the imports and exports of each quadrant.
Keralie, part of Mackiel's infamous band of thieves called dippers, is one of his best. When Keralie is tasked with sealing Varin, and Eonist messengers, comm case, she has no idea the deadly secrets it contains. Varin, in danger of losing his life, attempts to retrieve the case and its contents but finds himself tangled up in a conspiracy involving the assassination of all four of Quadara's queens.
Four Dead Queens is a YA dystopian fantasy/mystery novel in which a conspiracy to murder the four rulers of Quadara is intercepted by two unlikely heroes. Keralie, a skilled thief and liar, finds herself stuck with Varin, a specimen of perfection and truth, when she steals his comm case containing a murderous plot. Together they must discover who is behind the death of Quadara’s queens. I really enjoyed the premise for this novel and that it was a stand-alone novel and not another series I have to wait years to finish. The novel is entertaining and has several plot twists that will keep the reader guessing until the end. I really wanted to LOVE this one but for some reason it just fell flat for me. It’s not that the novel wasn’t enjoyable it just wasn’t as good as I had built it up to be. This is probably much closer to a 3.5 star rating for me. The characters were interesting, the plot was entertaining, but nothing really stood out as extraordinary in the world of YA fantasy. Overall, I still believe that this is going to be a favorite for many YA readers and expect it to do very well when it’s released.
