An entertaining book but still slightly disappointing

I came into this book with high expectations, and while I was mostly entertained with the story, I was still disappointed. I didn't really feel anything for the main characters, Keralie and Varin. They just didn't really matter to me, and in order for me to love a book I personally need to at least like the characters and want their well-being. And in this case, I just felt nothing.
One thing I did love about this book was the world and the world-building. I loved the idea of four queens, and on the rare occasions where there was a chapter in the point of view of one of these queens, I couldn't stop reading. In fact, I think I would have enjoyed this book a hundred times more if it had been focused simply on the four queens instead of Keralie and Varin. I also enjoyed the action near the end and the twists that I did not see coming. Unfortunately, in the case of the majority of the book, I still just didn't love it. I wanted to, I just couldn't bring myself to really, really like anything that didn't include the queens or the fast-paced action we see at the end.
