Before I start my review, can we just take a minute to appreciate the cover? Like, how gorgeous is that cover? From the four crowns tot he color scheme, everything about the cover works (as well as goes perfectly with the plot and theme). But okay, enough about that. Now on to the review.

Four Dead Queens revolves around Keralie, a thief. When she steals a com case for her boss, she accidentally gets involved in a conspiracy that leaves the four queens that rule Concord, dead. Not knowing what to do and no longer having a home she’s welcome at, she must team up with the stoic messenger that she stole from to set things straight.

Four Dead Queens is told in Keralie’s perspective, but we also get a few chapter in between her perspective that’s told in third person. These chapters narrate the queen’s lives, which I really liked. It wasn’t just that these four queens that we knew nothing about were killed. We get to know them, their secrets and who they were, which I really liked. It added a fresh perspective to the narrative. I also liked Keralie’s story telling. She was such a fun character to read about. She wasn’t just a thief, but someone who struggled to find her place and what she wanted. She’s calculating and ambitious, but we also see a bit of a softer side that shows us that she cares. Then there’s Varin, the messenger. He’s very unemotional, or at least he’s supposed to see, but we get sneak peaks to the life that he wants underneath his eyes. We see that he wants more than the life that he was given. They honestly made such a great team. I had a bit of trouble seeing any form of chemistry, but they both had qualities that each other needed.

I really liked the plot. It was fast paced and I never knew where the story was headed. Not only did it keep me on the edge of my seat, but it was such a fun read. From the very beginning, we are immersed in this world that we don’t know much about, but we get enough information to be intrigued and enough to want to know more. I liked the twists and turns and the obstacles that Keralie faces, including the betrayal and new friendships. I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for both the characters and myself.

I also really liked the world. Keralie lives in Concord, but it’s also split up in four quadrants, each one ruled by a different queen, having a total of, you guessed it, four queens. Not only does each queen rule differently, but they all four quadrants value different skills. There’s a futuristic quadrant where technology thrives, an artistic one, one where people learn to hide all emotion and so on. This was really interesting because we get glimpses and motivations of the different cast of characters as well as their upbringings and why the queens could have been targeted for.

Overall, this was actually a quick, fun read. I enjoyed everything about it. From the different characters and their upbringings, motivations, and secrets, to this different world divided and ruled by sister queens (they’re not actually related, but they were each other’s family). This will definitely be one of the most anticipated reads of 2019.
