I am pleasantly surprised by this. The first few chapters of this book deliver a terrific balance of action and exposition that grips your interest right off the get-go, which is often difficult to do well. However, it really worked for me as the vivid world-building cushioned the blunt action in such a way that it felt rich and easy to read, and that helped me break out of my reading slump.
So far, I really like this book's wily characters, VERY nice world-building, and snappy pacing. It has a level of balance that somewhat reminds me of An Ember in the Ashes, a book that has a different narrative yet delivers a similar sense of suspense and ease. Highly promising start!
