When a book begins with a woman trying to pick up a man, I already know that I am not going to be interested. It then further devolved into fighting and a war - also not interested.
I was more interested in hearing/reading about Ophelia and her mentally ill family, but I am not sure how much the story will develop in that vain.
I did like that the excerpt ended in a cliffhanger.
