Am I looking into a crystal ball? Followers hit a nerve with current society and where our Instagram-obsessed world is heading.

If you are looking for a mix of reality and science fiction with a dash of celebrity gossip and 24/7 insight into an influencer’s life, read Followers by Megan Angelo.

Dipping in between two different timelines (2015 and 2051), readers are thrust into a world that is familiar to everyone with a phone and social media account. Orla is an aspiring novelist who makes her living by writing blogs about notorious celebrities. She soon pairs up with her friend, Floss to try to gain her career in a way that will help both of them succeed beyond their basic skills. Marlow lives thirty years in the future as an influencer. Viewers follow her every move that is calculated by producers. Both of their pasts will make a comeback into their present life as both women seek what they desire.

This novel bubbles with pop culture and futuristic gems. It feels like you are involved in secret worlds, yet everything is so public. The concept of trying to gain “followers” at whatever cost and having the world follow your every move is both unique and prophetic. It seems like our world is headed into the society that Angelo creates and it makes the story all the juicier. The writing is crisp and the story is fast-paced with vivid details and vibrant characters. Both main characters are likable and relatable. The mystery behind both of their pasts is interesting and well-developed throughout the novel. The entire plot weaves stories together with incredible character development. I questioned the cost of privacy the entire time.

This is a 4.5 stars novel. I would recommend this book to readers for the interesting perspective, main characters likeability, and a satisfying story.
