“There aren’t actually heroes or victims or villains…It’s all in the edit.” –Followers

I won an ARC copy of this book from Bookish, so thank you to Bookish and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review Followers in exchange for an honest review.

I was very eager to read Followers, and it did not disappoint.

The story follows three women, Floss, Orla, and Marlow, during different times in their lives, and how their lives intertwine. Changing technology, and a cataclysmic event, set the stage for how their lives will change forever.

As a fan of Black Mirror, I loved how the more science fiction parts of the story play out, with social commentary on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and reality television/YouTube can affect our lives more than we realize. It’s fascinating on a social level how in a culture of oversharing, people still have secrets. Followers also does well to examine the idea of “fame”, and how the truth belongs to the person with the most tantalizing, scandalous version of a story.
What stands out to me is the relationships between these three, very strong women. Each of them are heartbreakingly real in their struggles, and in their triumphs. This is science fiction done right, with humanity in the forefront and the technology being there to emphasize humanity, both good and bad.

I strongly recommend that this book go on your January 2020 reading list. You won’t regret it.
