This author, J.C. Cervantes, previously wrote a lot of middle grade books I enjoyed. This is the first YA book I've read by this author, and it was also good! Flirting with Fate is a YA romance with paranormal magic! I love YA books with magical realism. This book follows Ava, who misses her grandma's blessing when she's late to her Nana's death. This was because she got in car accident with a boy. The grandmother's blessing instead accidentally went to said boy. She wants to get the magic back from him so she tries to get close to him. But feelings develop. . . I really liked the grandma's ghost in this and her sisters, her entire family was easy to love. I didn't like Achilles but I did like Rion's character and the romance. There's a lot of good representation in this book, Mexican rep, and LGBT+ rep. I could have done without the flashbacks in this book but I can't wait for the second.
