Trigger Warnings: sexual assault, drug use, kidnapping, murder
The Firekeeper's Daughter was not what I was expecting it to be, honestly. I generally don't go into books with opinions formed, I usually don't read the full summaries either. And yet, this book did not go how I expected it to.
The plot was interesting enough. I wasn't surprised by most "villains" of the story, however, there were still some surprises at the end.
The Native American heritage and culture shown throughout the book was something I appreciated. I haven't really read a book with a Native American main character before (i'm trying to expand what I read) and to see the culture was amazing. The insight into the racial hierarchy for lack of better word was fascinating as I had never considered how skin color played into Native American communities.

I'm not necessarily sure this is a young adult series, perhaps geared more towards the older end of young adult becuase of some of the themes in this book.
