Firekeeper’s Daughter, an amazing debut by Angeline Boulley, was the first #SaturdayBookstaClub buddy read this month and we started off with a bang.

Literally.

The story begins when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder. It was one of those right place/wrong time things that spins her life in a whole new direction. Daunis was already trying to fit into her two worlds, with her mom’s wealthy side of the family in her Michigan hometown and her dad’s side of the family on the nearby Ojibwa reservation. Now she has reluctantly agreed to work covertly with the FBI as they investigate several drug related deaths.

Daunis is so smart and compassionate and wise beyond her 18 years, but this assignment will test every bit of who she is, who she wants to be, and who she must be in order to help her family and friends.

Once again, I picked this book up because of the buddy read, knowing nothing about it except it had a cool cover. A cover that made me just assume it was a fantasy. Two pages in and I realize it isn’t fantasy but gritty real life with coming of age angst, a little romance, a lot of mystery, and a fascinating glimpse of this Indigenous culture.

Veronica Mars meets Winter Counts with a side of Beartown (if I can mix mediums) and I am all for it! Hockey is big, drugs are rampant, and corruption flows, but our girl Daunis is deep in it now. She is learning what it means to be a true Ojiwe woman and what it takes to hold her world together.

I loved this book so much. I was so immersed in this amazing story. The characters were so well developed that I felt like they were people I knew and I loved/hated them. The elders were both fierce and funny and exactly who I would want on my side!

Great book worth all the stars! I finished this over a week ago and just thinking about it and some parts of it makes me smile. Give yourself some smiles and read this one! (read it before it becomes the hottest new Netflix series!
