That cover though 😍...
This was a very well written debut. There was a lot more going on, so many layers and emotions, than just a YA "thriller". I also feel like I learned a lot about the Native community, being an own voices novel. I really didn't know what to expect going in, and what I got was not was I expecting, but in a good way.
The main character is Daunis Fontaine (Firekeeper). Who is a part of two different families, and two different cultures. Her French family, who are well off and don't like Indians. And her Indian family and culture. She's kind of an outcast because of her pale skin and French family, but mostly because they didn't allow her mother to put her father's name on her birth certificate, thus excluding her Firekeeper name. Her brother, who is 3 months younger than her, has the acceptance that she's always wanted. This was a book of finding yourself, dealing with grief and betrayal, and knowing yourself. It was rich in Native culture, and there were traditions that they did that I really liked. There were a lot of layers to peel back, even when you kind of guessed at something. There was much more surrounding it to still make it impactful.
