Going into this book I’m not sure what I was expecting. But, I know what I got was much much more.

Daunis as a character was someone I could sympathize with. Living on the outside of 2 different worlds and not knowing exactly where she fits causes her to be seemingly sheltered and withdrawn. Growing up the forgotten daughter of an indigenous hockey star, with hockey talent of her own and a brain that scores her science honors would make one think she would be popular and well loved. She is well loved but, widely not accepted as one of her tribal people.

When a new form of meth starts claiming the lives of the people she knows and loves she can’t sit idle and allow it to happen. She agrees to go undercover with the FBI risking the respect she is so desperately trying to earn. Everyone is a suspect even her half brother Levi.

Throughout this book the native language brings a level of lyrical beauty that is unmatched in so many other books. The facts about indigenous injustices, the ignored indigenous women who go missing every year, and the unfair treaties that white America still strive to break being light to a genocide that is still happening today.

This book made me laugh, made me cry, and most of all made me love.

This will be a future reread for me and should be in everyone’s hands.
