Daunis Fontaine is part Ojibwe, and when the meth epidemic in her community leads to a murder, she's reeling. She finds solace in newcomer Jamie, and she agrees to go undercover to help him figure out the source of the meth. But this tight-knit community is filled with secrets, and she may not like what she finds.

This book is marketed as a YA thriller due to the meth investigation storyline. Initially, I was really drawn in by the mystery, but as the story went on, I found myself more drawn to Daunis' coming of age story. I loved her inner strength and determination, as well as her dedication to best friend Lily and her mother and brother. I would definitely read a sequel to Daunis' story - perhaps a deeper look at her gifts for traditional medicine. My one complaint about the book is the length - part 2 seemed like it could have been a bit shorter.

I definitely think the audiobook is the way to go with this one - I loved Isabella Star LaBlanc's narration. Hearing the pronunciation of the Ojibwe words helped me feel immersed in the story. Since many Native tribes have strong oral traditions, it seems very fitting to hear the story that way. I highly recommend this book.
