I happened to read this book right before we took a trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula (where this book is set) which somehow added to the depth of connection I felt with the story. I appreciated how genuine, sincere, and relatable the characters were as well as the transparency about the struggles of being Native American in the USA in current times.

I will say that I'm surprised to find that this book is a considered YA novel, unless by "Young Adult" they are talking about people in their late teens/early 20s. I don't know that this is a book I would recommend to a teen younger than 16, but that's just my own perspective. The story is well written and explores some really important, relevant topics that deserve to be discussed, I'm just not sure that anyone younger than upper high school would be able to have meaningful conversations about the topics in this book.
