Unpopular opinion coming your way. Please don’t throw rotten tomatoes or moldy peaches.

Firekeeper’s Daughter will be exactly the right book for a lot of readers, but I wasn’t one of them. I didn’t enjoy spending time with Daunis, our main character and narrator, and, by halfway, decided to put this in the DNF pile.

Daunis, who is 18, has the unformed identity of a young teen; overly altruistic about some things and overly judgmental about other things (and people). One minute she’s too perfect, and the next she’s making catty remarks about other girls based on her own self-righteousness, rumors, and whatever else kids use to judge their peers. Her thoughts and behavior are often childish, more junior high than heading into college. She kind of grated on me, honestly.

Pacing is SLOW. Nothing happens for a long time.

The content, to me, has too many dark complexities for the book’s overall melodramatic tone. The topics here are heavy: drug abuse, racism, murder, sexual assault, etc. I wanted more grit, more insight, but what I got was a lot of drama.

The love interest angle was, for me, problematic, for reasons I can’t state because of spoilers. And this reveal is when the book really lost me.

I did enjoy being immersed in Native culture. Ultimately, though, it wasn’t enough to keep me reading.
