There's so much about this book I love: the flawed perceptions people of color are judged by on a daily basis, the trauma of sexual abuse, the cyclical nature of addition, etc. Daunis's story is not a light one, but it doesn't glorify suffering either.

The prose here is stunning in its lean, tight way with words. It is very much action-driven as much as it is character-driven without losing value in either, and the broad range of topics you are taught as you chase through these crime-solving pages amaze and astound.

Daunis is a strong, nuanced protagonist that readers will turn fiercely loyal to, but it is her community that truly shines. The found family motifs and themes within this book was crafted carefully, and it will take you a moment to get through the foundational chapters that introduce you to each part of Daunis' circle of friends/family she leans on, but it is so worth the effort. Community is a strong part of everyone's culture, but it means something more within the indigenous community as a people who have survived generational systemic oppression, violence, and trauma. The portrayal of Daunis' indigenous background and how she wrestles for acceptance in her search for identity is relatable and emotionally fulfilling.
