This book took me completely by surprise and I can’t believe I waited this long to finally read it. It is so beautifully heartbreaking yet also uplifting and calming at the same time. A mix of Nancy Drew mystery, coming-of-age love story, familial drama and love letter to the authors Ojibwe culture.

You are really given a deep sense of who the main character, Daunis is- or at least her struggle to understand who she is within her community and for herself. Being torn between two cultures, not feeling like she fits-in within either, and so much loss blanketing her entire life it is easy to get wrapped up in her story.

There’s this deep, unbreakable love for her culture and people and traditions that shines through in every chapter. This novel is so full of twists and turns, of love and loss, of deception and misplaced trust and most of all courage. And it all flows together so brilliantly I was surprised this was Angeline Boulley’s debut novel. I cannot wait to see what she writes next.
