This book will for sure be in my top five, but honestly, it may end up being my favorite of this year. I absolutely adored it. This is a debut novel, and it is so beautifully and well written that I have to sing praise to the author for this one. Daunis is an amazing character, and you live in the book with her. She goes through so much and you just empathize with everything she has to deal with, as well as where she comes from. It does go through a lot of sensitive topics but the author handles them very well. Another thing the author did was introduce Native American culture in tradition and history, also bringing in some language and it was really interesting to learn about. Having been to Sault. Ste. Marie, that made this just all the more special because I have memories there and the UP (Upper Peninsula, MI) is such a beautiful area which is another thing this author did justice to. I think this is one of those books that you don’t just read but you experience and I would absolutely recommend for anyone to give this a chance.
