The Firekeeper's Daughter is a story that stays with the reader after finishing the book.

The author wove Native American identity, family, community, culture, traditions, loss, and joy into a young adult thriller of drugs, the FBI, and being a CI, the former not only introducing the reader to such a rich culture, but acting as a character in the story as well. Deep emotional loss is an important theme throughout eighteen year old Daunis' story.

I appreciate the care and craft of the author's writing, her strong command of setting and atmosphere. Daunis' story was more authentic by the deliberate choice of not having a neat, happy ending where the girl gets the guy and everything somehow works out perfectly. There are many words of wisdom sprinkled throughout the story that the reader can take away and use in their own life.

My only critique is that I was surprised to find out a little over twenty pages in that the story was taking place in the early 2000s, though I may have missed the clues leading up to that point.

I look forward to reading more from this author!
