What a book! I love that it actually made me think about the choices the characters were faced with. The decisions they grappled with, were heavy and caused me to examine my own reactions. I like that nothing was easy in this book. It had a very real premise that was not easily resolved. I feel like some YA fantasy books skip over the pain and loss of war. They put all the focus on revenge or justice. This book really highlights how a new country or society handles changes and the mess of emotions that comes with that. I thought it would be easy to fall in love with Annie and leave Lee out in the cold. But the author does something special in how she takes the time to really navigate the confusing and often times conflicting emotions these characters have. That was the best aspect of this book by far.
