The world in Fireborne is complex politically and socially, so this fantasy has a slow start with a focus on Annie and Lee. Both are orphans but Lee has a secret of being aristocracy who watched his family murdered by revolutionaries. Annie was orphaned when Lee’s father ordered them to be burnt by dragon fire. The book involves the tournaments to determine who will be Firstrider, but also political intrigue. In addition to all of this, there is a slow burn romance. I appreciate the details in Fireborne that reminded me of Red Rising. The famine that leads to the revolution has underpinnings of the potato famine in Ireland. Morally, the book questions whether the new order is any different than the overthrown aristocracy. I look forward to reading more in this world.
