Fireborne is a novel about what it means to overcome the greatest possible hardships life can throw at someone and maintain a sense of justice and virtue even when forced to make morally questionable decisions. It's a story of love, war, courage, cruelty, and an absolute resolution to defend what is right at all gruesome costs.

Orphans Lee and Annie grow into fearsome dragon riders that must defend their nation from the impending threat of Lee's secret, forbidden long-lost relatives. They learn hard lessons about life and what it truly means to fill the roles they do. It's a fast-paced, exciting, and really intense read that definitely leaves you wanting more.

I found all of the characters in the novel to be fully fleshed out and complex. None of them feel truly good or bad, and I love how true to real life that is. They are strong, courageous, and wise far beyond their years. They definitely don't read like typical teenagers with the incredibly heavy burdens they have endured, but they are definitely interesting and worth getting to know. The writing in the novel is really strong. It's compelling and captivating. I was completely immersed in the world of Callipolis, and while I found some of the logic that forced the characters into certain ultimatums really troubling, I appreciated what those choices did for their development, even though I didn't think they would realistically ever be made that way.

Overall, I think the novel is a necessary read for fans of YA fantasy and who aren't faint of heart. Many dark, tragic events occur in this novel that make me want to be a better person in real life. I think a book that can do all that is definitely worth picking up.
