They definitely don't read like typical teenagers with the incredibly heavy burdens they have endured, but they are definitely interesting and worth getting to know. The writing in the novel is really strong. It's compelling and captivating. I was completely immersed in the world of Callipolis, and while I found some of the logic that forced the characters into certain ultimatums really troubling, I appreciated what those choices did for their development, even though I didn't think they would realistically ever be made that way.
Overall, I think the novel is a necessary read for fans of YA fantasy and who aren't faint of heart. Many dark, tragic events occur in this novel that make me want to be a better person in real life. I think a book that can do all that is definitely worth picking up.
