The author looks back on her early years in the first two chapters with a combination of nostalgia for the good things and painful viewpoints on the events and situations that shaped her.

Her writing style has the ability to transport me directly into the story, so that I'm right there with her as she works the grill in a hot, overwhelmingly busy kitchen when all she wants is a break to sit down, or when she experiences the loss of a beloved pet. I can feel her sense of being trapped in a small town where no one gets out or has any other options. The cover is bright and hopeful, which makes me sure that future chapters have a different tone than her early experiences.

It makes me wonder what else happens in Erin's life. I know that her life gets worse from the description of the story, but I also know that she overcomes her challenges to reach successes as well. I want to learn more about her path in life.
