Moving and thought provoking
This is such an emotional and thought provoking book. It’s a YA, but I think older readers will enjoy this book too! I loved the way the story was told through multiple POVs from multiple generations. The story unfolds in a really unique way with the author showing Fransisco, Emil, and Chris as teenagers, which also gives the reader the ability to see them as fathers and grandfathers too. It really showed all of the trauma, prejudice, and anxiety that was passed from one generation to the next. Each of the four men went through so much.
I really connected with Enzo in 2020 during the pandemic. I think the pandemic really brought out a lot of past traumas in families as people were forced to quarantine together. This felt very relatable. I also really appreciated the history of struggles between the Philippines and the United States. It’s all very thought provoking!
I definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoy intergenerational stories that deal with family trauma.
