Great writing
I am a huge historical fiction fan especially multigenerational and of a history or topic I have never read before.
This book spans from the first arrival/generation immigrants who moved to the United States from the Philippines in the 1930s to the most recent generation in 2020 during the covid pandemic. Each generation has their own set of problems by the choices their fathers made firstly by immigrating to America (horrible working conditions and low pay), anger, racism, and being a father to the next generation Filipino American.
I knew nothing about the Filipino culture going into this book and some of the language I didn’t understand but overall I flew through this book.
The writing is phenomenal.
I do wish the ending had more of a summary about what happened to each individual such as Franciscos rebellion, The rest of Emils younger life, Chris’ life after he left, and if they all survived Covid.
I related to this book in that I think we all have generational trauma from our parents all the way back.
