What stands out most about this thriller are all its layers. You have the mystery within the mystery, as we seek to discover who killed Matt’s family in the present day and whether his brother Danny was truly guilty of the murder he was convicted of years ago. You have the documentary that casts doubt on Danny’s guilt. And there are multiple POVs; you get to know Matt’s family and the FBI investigator.

All of that keeps the book interesting even when the plot goes a bit awry. There was one major thread that just...never turned into anything terribly relevant. I was able to predict the ultimate conclusion fairly easily, even though I try hard to turn that part of my brain off when I’m reading a thriller. And Matt, like many thriller protagonists, makes a lot of dumb, difficult to understand decisions.

But despite that, the layers, which added intrigue to the plot and depth to the characters (Maggie will break your heart!), made the novel well worth the read.
