Bless me, we start this book with the discovery of 4 members of an unfortunate family dead in a Mexican resort. Why are they dead and was it foul play? The FBI gets involved because the father, Even, was on the interview list for a financial crime at the place he was fired from. Then we go forward as one of the surviving sons, Matt, just tries to stay alive long enough to bury his family. We dance backwards to see members of the family try to get the other surviving son, Danny, released from prison. He's been convicted of killing his girlfriend. There were several procedural errors in his case, but no one in authority cares. There was enough circumstantial evidence to convict and that is enough for them. Matt does think his brother is guilty and he hates the amount of time and effort the rest of his family is expending on the case.
Each chapter is clearly labeled "before" when we are going into the past. That does keep confusion to a minimum. Also, the chapters also tell us who we are going to focus on. I like that.
The story takes a few turns that I did not expect. Those twists lead to a very satisfying solution to the mysteries, and there is more than one mystery in this book. They are connected and yet separate. I liked the way they were presented.
I received the copy of this book I read for this review from BookishFirst.
