I was so excited to see this alternate history/timetravel thriller and the beginning sure doesn't disappoint! Years of Rice and Salt is the only other book I've read that posits an Arab-dominant world, but that was a true alternate history (Black Plague decimated the West). In other time-travel books, Western dominance is mostly assumed (writers of English). In this book, it's apparent that someone has messed with history deliberately; it's also apparent that humanity's predilection for unintended consequences reigns undisturbed. The world we intend is rarely the world that happens, no matter what side of history we're on.
