The handsome cover to Elsewhere is what initially drew me in. It is beautiful, mysterious, and a hint of creepy, just like the book itself. Elsewhere follows the story of small town that is isolated from the outside world and raises girls to become only one thing, Mothers. The problem is, mothers disappear and that is just “the norm” in this town. The main character Vera is naive and at times frustrating, but you still root for her to find answers and happiness. To me, the real beauty of this book is the authors lyrical and evocative take of motherhood. At times dark and sad, it rang true to the harsh realities, questions, and judgement that new mothers endure. Elsewhere took me by surprise and ended up being a very emotional read. It is slow going, but has an interesting turn of events. This is a book that I know will stick with me for long after I have put it down.
