Decent Read

I recently read Alexis Schaitkin’s debut novel “Saint X” and was excited to pick up the author’s latest book. However, I found this book to be difficult to get through, although it did get better in the last 50 pages or so and then I plowed through it. Most of the time the writing was dry and lacking action, which definitely made it harder to read. This book reminded me of Shirley Jackson’s writing (in both style and theme), but I will admit something about this writing style just doesn’t work for me.

The setting and characters were fully described and developed, which made it easy to picture the scenes while reading. The story itself was interesting, but also predictable; I guessed the “twist” early on and that definitely took away from the book. I definitely think this novel would have worked better as a short story, but it was an overall decent read.
