Elsewhere starts out in a mysterious town high up in the mountains where things aren’t quite right. Young mothers seem to disappear into thin air then measures are taken to erase that she was ever there. It is just the way things are. Vera is a young girl who has lost her mother and grows up to start her own family. The story continues and she must come to terms with her own wrestling and figure the connection with motherhood and her own identity.

I have never read a truer allegory of motherhood and the complicated emotions, relationships, and identity confusion that this book presents. The story was strange, and dark at times and I had such a connection with how the author presents the immensely complicated topic of motherhood and teases through a thread of connection. I absolutely loved it. There were a couple of cringe parts that I felt like didn’t add to the story but I thought the overall flow of the story was spot on. Such a haunting, and vulnerable story targeted towards mothers.
