I think that Elsewhere by Alexis Schaitkin is a very well-written and creative book. Elsewhere is narrated by the protagonist, Vera who lives in an isolated town that values its traditions and does not accept change. Any outsider that comes to Vera's village is a stranger. Ruth is one of those strangers that does come to the village. Elsewhere is also a book about motherhood, the role of mothers in a traditional society, and what that role is exactly. It can be compared to other speculative fiction books like The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Schaitkin writes wonderfully and her prose flows from page to page. I really enjoyed this book because it made you reflect and ask a lot of questions. Overall, this was a great, short read that will take a day or two to finish, and I think that it's an important story for people to read. I hope others will enjoy it as I enjoyed it.
