I'm instantly intrigued not only by the "affliction"; but also how the main character Vera speaks about the town, the environment, as if it has agency. How it acts on the people of the town as much as they interact with it. The first descriptions of the clouds, the very atmosphere shaping and in some ways inhabiting the townsfolk. I'm curious also about the role of photography- it makes me think of the belief that a photo captures the soul.
I really look forward to reading this book to see if those aspects carry on and to learn more about what happens to these women. I found it interesting that Vera claims you can look back and see the flaws in their love as a cause for their disappearance. That a mother can be judged as somehow unworthy, whether by loving too much or not enough, is very real in our own society.
The cover is gorgeous, both lovely and haunting. Really excited to read more!
