This was a pretty good read. A healthy mix of teen angst, real life grief issues, and a deep dive into addiction issues that I wasn't expecting from a YA novel, both from Sawyer and his mother. The characters fall a bit into line with stereotypical roles, i.e. golden boy, lonerish weirdo girl, etc, but the author deftly handled some heavy issues, lending the characters more grace than their cookie cutter templates. I enjoyed it overall, the dual narrator format and the close relationship between the protagonist and her father. The ending was particularly moving. I love that it was set in Kentucky and that there are echoes of Waverly Hills in the writing about the sanatorium. Definitely worth a read!
