I enjoyed reading Duncan M. Hamilton's Dragonslayer. While it has similar themes to some other fantasy books I've read recently, it does have a few elements that I haven't read recently.

Guillot is a washed-up, has-been soldier. Once, he could have been called the most fearsome fighter in the land, but that's no longer the case. He spends most of his days drinking. Although he's the Lord of a village, he mostly leaves them alone. Thinks he's doing a favor by not taxing them.

Fate doesn't leave him alone to drink himself to death, however. Guillot is also the last of the Chevalìers of the Silver Circle - once known to slay dragons centuries ago. Dragons haven't been seen in 1000 years, so their presence is pretty much unnecessary.

Or so they think.

Dragonslayer is the first book in a trilogy about Guillot. In this book, we learn that despite being a drunkard, he does care for people, and is willing to stick his neck out for them. He also has a very powerful enemy.

At only 301 pages, Dragonslayer doesn't waste words. It also doesn't answer every question that you might have about these people. What exactly happened to Guillot's wife and son? Is there any particular reason why Guillot made his enemy? There may be more explained later on in the trilogy.

Overall, I liked the book, and will probably read the next book in the series.
