Really, this was an enjoyable book, but I never was quite drawn into the story.

It follows Guillot, otherwise known as Gill. He's a lord over some fantasy French area and is a former knight. After his wife and child die, he's accused of something that he didn't do and barely survived it. He turned to drink and that's where we find him in the story. An alcoholic with a past. Then, a dragon comes to his town and he's thrust back into the life that he barely survived the first time.

Overall, this is a good book. It's interesting, the writing is good, the characters feel earnest, and it kept my attention for the most part. Admittedly, I did have to start it over at one point because I got lost and I figured that it'd be easier to just start over rather than push through confusedly.

But, I was just never drawn into the story. I never felt like I had to know what the characters were going to do next or what awful thing would happen in the next chapter. When I read the ending, I closed the book and felt like it could have been a stand-alone if some things had been changed. It just felt lackluster. I was waiting for some huge twist that would spur me on to the next book. It just never happened.

I enjoyed it, but I won't continue with the series.
