Needs an Extra Pinch of Dramatics

It was an interesting start, but lacking slightly in the drama and excitement. I loved that we are instantly thrown into the conflict with the dragon, as well as provided with the dragon's own point of view. However, the first chapter especially lacked a certain punch. We are introduced to these exploring mages, and then they are eaten by the dragon. It had the same concept as the very beginning of A Game of Thrones, but it didn't seem climatic enough. Where George R. R. Martin excels at surprise and suspense, this seemed rather flat. Just a sort of passing, "Oops, then the dragon ate them all." Hopefully, this trend does not continue throughout the entire book. Otherwise, I'm very intrigued by the characters and premise and would be interested in going further to see if more drama is in store.
