I understand that we are dealing with a book set in the 1980s but I am so tired of the 'she can't do this she's a woman' trope that I felt like slamming my head into the wall every time it was mentioned. I get it, we all get it, it's the 1980s and women detectives are rare which is utter nonsense. I could understand the flyboys feeling this way if the book was set in the 1960s or even the 70s but having the book set in 1987 and thinking that this whole 'whoa wait a minute, this is a woman who can think for herself' plot is just....bad?

Basically, because of this constant boring reminder, it made the rest of the book fall flat. Yes there is a cool mystery that needs to be solved but instead of finding myself engrossed in the story, all I could see were the stale mystery tropes that made the book seem more like a cozy mystery than what the author was going for.
