My first impression isn't the greatest. The men in the story seem to be really sexist, calling her "luv" and acting as though she can't possibly be there for work. Seems a bit strange to me as it is 1980 and not 1950 but I was not alive in 1980 so maybe the men were like that still. I didn't connect in the first chapter but it is hard to say as the premise of the story is still interesting and I am always interested in a good mystery. I just felt as though this was a bit of a feminist book, pushing the concept that women are good and that all men treat women poorly. This a popular narrative right now and one I am completely against. Women can do a lot, and there are jerky men. But to make women out to be marvelous and men out to be monsters seems disingenuous. I cannot know for sure that is the direction the book will take but it is the vibe that it gave off in the first impression.
