The stunning writing, almost poetic at times, makes this a book worth reading. The unnamed narrator's son has recently died, and the father's grief is palpable. Shortly after the funeral, he learns he has inherited a former plantation that was to have been his son's, and he has to figure out what this property means to him, as a biracial man. He talks constantly to his deceased son, which brings the son to life, too.

Sometimes the story gets a bit odd. It can be hard to figure out what is reality and what is something altogether different. Don't skip over these parts of the book. They provide deeper meaning to the narrative, making us part of the narrator's grief and healing.

The excellent writing weaves the story threads together in a way that leaves the reader fulfilled and wanting more. This lovely book is definitely worth the read. I am planning to read more by this author.
