YA mysteries can be hit-or-miss for me. Maybe I read too many adult mysteries and as such, have higher expectations, but Ginny Myers Sain’s debut, Dark and Shallow Lies, ended up not being the book for me. The story was very much character-driven, which is usually one of my favorite types of novels, but this book's pacing felt off to me.

Sain spends much of the novel describing her setting: La Cachette, Louisana. Through her storytelling, Sain brings Louisiana’s oppressive heat and tumultuous storms to the forefront so that readers can experience the dramatic setting right alongside Grey. Not only is Grey trying to solve the mystery of Elora's disappearance, but she must do so before an approaching hurricane hits the small town. Other readers may be immediately drawn in by Sain's eery descriptions of La Cachette, making Dark and Shallow Lies the perfect atmospheric read for Fall.
