I was very surprised by this debut, particularly thriller/ mystery YA debuts. Recently, a lot of YA has not been meeting my old expectations of the genre, and I'm unsure if this is because my taste in books is completely different or not. I ended up DNF-ing this book because I just did not care for the character at the moment. This isn't to say I'll never come back because this book has LOADS of potential, but I just need to take a step back. The three stars is a happy medium because I don't want to score this a one or two stars cause that seems unfair.
One of my favorite parts to this novel was the setting though! I love bayou and Louisiana settings, so it was such a treat to see a thriller set her, especially because bayous are VERY scary honestly. So many crimes can go undetected because of the environment and swamp. Ultimately, this story reminded me of a lot of true crime stories/ disappearances I've listened to lately. I think plenty of YA readers would love this.
