Oh, this book! I felt it all in the pit of my stomach. Its darkness. Its sadness. Everything about this was gorgeous and tragic, just as the alluring cover promised it would be!
Dark and Shallow Lies is the story of a missing girl in a town full of psychics. Grey, the best friend of the victim, has returned for her yearly summer visits. She is determined to solve the mystery of what happened to Elora. There are layers beneath this mystery, though, and the townspeople know far more about past tragedies, which seem to connect to the present, than they are willing to reveal.
This was all so much more than I was expecting! The author effortlessly pulled small town prejudices and willful ignorance, along with deep guilt and overwhelming loss, into a profoundly imagined, twisty tale with an ending I never saw coming!
I really loved some of the characters in this. I won’t tell you who my favorite was, as I don’t want to affect your list of suspects when you read this, but there was definitely one character, in particular, I especially adored. I thought the character development, in general, was incredible. Some psychics were wholly tortured in their empathic abilities and it was written in a way that made me feel it all, too.
And how about that writing?! 😍 Ginny Myers Sain told this story with such poetic eloquence! She captured the atmosphere perfectly and never failed to probe at my heart with her tragically beautiful lines.
Plunging into Dark and Shallow Lies was quite the experience for me and I can’t wait for other readers to experience it, too! There wasn’t a single thing I didn’t love! This is a story that will haunt me for a long time as I continue to process all that unraveled.

I am immensely grateful to Razorbill Books and BookishFirst for my review copy. All opinions are my own.
Dark and Shallow Lies will be out on September 7.
