Thank you to Bookish First for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Dark and Shallow Lies paints a lush, lyrical, and haunting story that quickly grabs the reader and does not let go until the final page, much like the dangerous, murky Louisiana bayou waters. The reader can almost hear the crickets and cicadas in the swampy background as they are relentlessly pulled down a spellbinding tale.
Grey's story wove elements of emotional loss, darkness, sadness, psychic powers, and a terrifying sense of impending doom during an atmospheric, humid summer in the middle of a small town mystery. This book makes for an excellent and captivating lazy summer afternoon read, or beginning of fall horror thriller with paranormal elements. The twists and turns of Grey's quest to find answers and what happened to her best friend Elora had echoes of Pretty Little Liars at time, which was a nice touch.
