I was hooked from the first page, and really appreciated the references to Tolkien's works. The peek into Persian culture was very interesting to me, as it's a culture I have little knowledge about. I enjoyed the tone of the narrator; sarcasm, sincerity, and a taste for the over-dramatization of small occurrences, all of which add to the humour of the extract.
All of the characters had a very authentic feel to them and were well-rounded in my opinion. I feel as though it's not often that a father-son relationship is explored in this genre of book, so that interested me and I am quite curious as to how the protagonist's relationship with his father might develop throughout the story. It's also interesting to me to have the protagonist be multiracial and be dealing with racism from those around him, as it was quite eye-opening.
